We Draw It. You Name It
By FirstDown PlayBook on May 30, 2014

When I worked for Lovie Smith back in Chicago if someone in our meeting asked why a defense or a pressure was called by some name that made no sense to anyone in the room, Lovie would slyly respond “Because that’s what it’s called!” Everyone would laugh and we would move on. He’s right because if you’re not careful you’ll spend all day on what to call something instead of how to teach it correctly.

If I had a room full of offensive football coaches and were to ask “how many of you run this play?” My guess is that most of the hands in the room would go up.  Then if I asked you all to take out a sheet of paper, write down what you call the play and turn it in to me, I’m almost positive that I would not find any two names that were the same.

Having said this now put yourself in our position when we were building FirstDown PlayBook’s DropBack app. We had over 5200 plays but what and how do we name them?! That’s when it occurred to us that we didn’t have to. We would let you name them.

We had to start somewhere so we used a system similar to the old NFL numbering method but once you find a play you like you just rename it to what you want to call it. And after that you can…well that’s for another day.

Let’s just say that this football app is a tool that can make your life a lot easier as a football coach, player or fan and trust us when we say the best is yet to come.
