Use Your Backs With 738 F Angle Return
By FirstDown PlayBook on Nov 16, 2013

We are always looking for a place to take a shot down the field especially when you are in this formation that really allows you to have the best of both worlds with protection possibilities also. It could be 7 man protection with the RB’s scanning for the Safeties in case of pressure. However, it also allows you to get one or both backs out into a route.

If you are going to get the backs out just make sure you have an answer if there is pressure or if there is a breakdown up front with protection. This play provides all of that. If you run F or H Angle then this play is even better as the Mike LB is probably sitting inside waiting to wall the F on the Angle route. Give your QB a nice simple Y to F to H triangle read with the idea that the ball gets in the hands of your F in this picture. It is important for your Y to get his depth in order to get separation between he and the F. The H can be taught protection first. He is in no hurry to get out here as he is the third read.

If you are playing a team that likes to play quarters coverage on the two WR side then you can alert your QB to this if he can handle it. If the quarters Safety bites on the Y then he can take the shot to the Z who must get inside of the Corner to that side. The Y can do a lot to grab that Safety just by staring at him as he gets to the top of his route ready to break to the sideline. Vs quarters the Y can even be a little deeper on his route than 10 yards. Of course it always helps if you have an X who can line up on the single WR side and win if you get man coverage or even cover 3 in this picture.

The O-line would protect the 4 down to the MLB  and SLB. The Y or the F can provide you with a convenient hot throw if both of these two LB’s pressure from the strong side. Vs a WLB and F/S blitz the X can sight adjust with a Dart route or you can just let your QB stay with his hot throws strong. Obviously the QB must get the ball out of his hand in either of these situations.
