Fun Flag Football Starts With Learning
By FirstDown PlayBook on May 17, 2018

Every football player’s development started somewhere. These days more and more youth football players are getting their introduction to football through their flag football league. Of course, there is no blocking and tackling being taught here, however there is plenty to teach a young flag football player if you are a coach.

Flag football is no different than any other youth sport. Coach Little League baseball? If the second baseman lines up in left field you have a problem. Five point guards on your youth basketball team? Good luck.

When you coach your flag football team it’s the same kind of thing.  Stress the point to your players that they have an assignment and they won’t always get the ball. Their assignment might be to make sure someone else gets open to get the ball.

There are some plays where you are only coaching one player (The QB) on how the complete play fits together. This is no different than any other level of football. If you don’t believe that just ask any NFL Receiver what the Quarterback’s read is on a particular pass play.

“Is this any fun?” you ask.  Absolutely! You see, FirstDown PlayBook coaches two different flag football age groups. In both groups, we have been impressed by how the players have picked up on the football concepts that are viable at any level of football. Yes, everyone plays quarterback and we try to get the players to play as many different positions as possible.

Our point is to be careful when any group or organization tries to tell you that it is “ALL” about fun. That is normally the first step to rolling a ball out and letting the kids run around like bumble bees as they count your money. Fun can come from and always will come from achievement and learning. That won’t ever change.

This is why regardless of how simple one of our flag football plays might be and however young your players might be FirstDown PlayBook gives you coaching points and a color code to help you teach football while the kids are still having fun.

Want an example? Bang on the flag football drawing and we will coach you up on this simple progression read flag football pass play that they run on Sundays and that you can run with your flag football team regardless of the level.
