Is Your Flag Football Ready List Ready?
By FirstDown PlayBook on Jul 13, 2019

The number of football plays any football coach keeps on their “ready list” is always an important decision regardless of who or what level you coach on. If you don’t have enough then the defense will sit all over your small selection of plays. Have too many and you will find that your offense has suddenly become unable to run anything well.

When you factor in that you are coaching a young flag football team then the importance of finding the right balance is magnified. Your players are often very small and their attention spans are smaller. Whenever FirstDown PlayBook draws up 5v5 flag football plays we keep this in mind. Also as the official playbook resource of USA Football we draw all of our 5v5 flag football plays and defenses to conform to NFL Flag rules.

As we draw up these plays we mostly do it with the goal of creating some deception with the offense but at the same time making the football plays simple enough that six, seven and eight year olds will be able to run them effectively.

This often involves combining several plays into one so that the players can all do pretty much the same thing and only the quarterback does something different from one play to the next. This allows your flag football team to play fast and not be paralyzed by thinking about a new assignment on every play. It also allows you the coach top call the same play multiple times with different ways built in to attack the defense.

This is an older video but it does a good job of walking you through one of our 5v5 flag football plays so you can see how we help you coach your flag football team.
