It Always Starts With A Play Drawing
By FirstDown PlayBook on Jul 8, 2018

Technology has definitely changed the way we think about our avenues for teaching and coaching the game of football. We are literally faced with teaching a new generation that treats a paper textbook or playbook as if it were something from the museum that Mom and Dad used to use.

In the year 2018 computers are a must, tablets the norm and smartphones are definitely the preferred way of communicating with the millennial and Gen Z generations.  We here at FirstDown PlayBook have strived to keep up and mirror the trends that are device friendly. We allow you to coach in many different ways whether it be a traditional method like off of paper or a device that is a part of your every day life like your smartphone.

Having said this, FirstDown PlayBook is more certain than ever that teaching football all starts with a football play drawing. Regardless of if you are drawing a play on the restaurant napkin or designing a play to be used on virtual reality glasses, the idea can’t and never gets started without an initial football play drawing.

Not to name drop, but I met with Jon Gruden a few years back and he commented that drawings are primarily used so coaches can communicate with one another and so we, as coaches can initially present our ideas to our players. I agreed with him but then posed the question of “Yes but how would we ever get the idea of your play or scheme started without the drawing?”

Football play drawings are a little like steering wheels in a car. You won’t buy a car because it has a great steering wheel but you wouldn’t ever buy a car without one. So our point is that yes, we provide you with great technology, in fact technology so unique that it doesn’t exist anywhere else. However, in the meantime we will not lose sight of the fact that sound well drawn football plays produced by veteran NFL coaches has value too!

FirstDown PlayBook is the only Digital Football PlayBook that gives you access to over thirty three thousand football plays, schemes and technique help all designed by coaches and players with NFL experience. FirstDown Playbook is also the official PlayBook resource of USA Football and Football Canada..
