Keep Your RB Out Of The A Gap (In Pass Pro)
By FirstDown PlayBook on Oct 1, 2019

There is many an offensive line coach who loves to see their running back hit it up in the A gap regardless of if it’s a power, a trap or a zone run. We are all on board with that because a downhill running game is a very dangerous weapon for any offense.

When it comes to pass protection, not so much. Make no mistake about it, every now and then a running back needs to step up and take on that linebacker barreling down the shortest point to your quarterback but not often.

Your running back is going to take enough hits in a football game, if he is worth his salt. Repeatedly placing his face into a raging A gap bull rusher is not what he is paid for, or on scholarship for. Good offensive coordinators and offensive line coaches recognize this.

Today on All 22 Tuesday we will highlight several plays and one will focus on the excellent job the North Carolina defensive coaches did against Clemson on Saturday. Carolina had the Clemson tackles often blocking air while their running backs were consistently taking on a linebacker pressure in the A gaps.
