Coaching Can Increase Yards After Catch

You hear the abbreviation YAC thrown around a lot when folks start talking about receiver play. YAC or Yards After Catch is a valid way to evaluate the effectiveness of a receiver.

Sometimes when we hear people invoke the word though we worry that they think it’s completely a result of the player’s talent. This can and is a talent that is taught, like most of football. If you are a coach though, don’t excuse yourself from creating YAC.

When a receiver comes to the line of scrimmage there are always pre-snap and post snap keys to reveal important things about the coverage. The really good receivers use this knowledge to take their game to a higher level. They put the title “Coach” in front of your name to teach them how to do this.

If your receivers are just running routes then you are not coaching. we are not even talking about adjustments. We are talking about running yourself open by understanding coverage. It sounds like it’s very complicated but far from it. Give your receivers simple reads just like a 3 tech would have on a guard.
