Thursdays here on the FirstDown PlayBook Coaches Community website we feature a breakdown of personnel and technique. This is provided by our friends over at The Scouting Academy who are our go to experts in this field.

Hey, rookie! Welcome to Teachtape Thursday! This week we’ll be featuring Jaguars rookie wideout Laviska Shenault on a beautiful route that’s part of a well-designed concept that results in a Jacksonville TD.

We have Man-Free coverage by the defense, which is pretty common in the red area of the field. Against Man coverage, if Shenault ran straight across the field, this safety could just close the space, hang out in his back pocket, and discourage the throw or make a play on the ball. Instead, though, the play is designed with the stop-start, sometimes called a “jerk,” to free up Shenault.

First, it helps with the timing of the route. Shenault can clearly process what’s developing on the other side of the formation with the vertical routes and verify that it is in fact Man coverage. Additionally, the stop freezes the safety.

He has to honor the threat of a quick throw underneath. With the safety’s momentum frozen, Shenault restarts across the formation to the vacated spot on the field. Now the safety has no shot to keep up with the wideout. It’s an easy pitch and catch and a well-placed throw allows Shenault to catch the throw in stride and continue into the end zone.
