Ya Gotta Get 6 To The QB With This One
By FirstDown PlayBook on Dec 15, 2017

It takes a lot of guts to call up a zero pressure and remove that Free Safety from the middle of the field but a lot of defensive coordinators know that it’s a “risk and reward” deal. Sure it’s risky but if you are getting six defenders to the Quarterback often times good things are going to happen.

This is why it’s important to have your defense coached up on the offensive formations and have them drilled on exactly who is going to account for the Running Back if they free release. As we install our latest pressure that we are calling Under Saint Peel 0, we are careful to detail who has the Running Back in man coverage if he releases to the strong or the weak side.

Once that Running Back releases weak, away from the pressure, the away side Defensive End must understand to peel with the Running Back. Just as importantly the Linebacker responsible for the Running Back to the strong side must know to add on with pressure if the Back releases weak. This way you are always assured of getting six to the Quarterback or six aggressive players defending the run and that means whatever the offense is going to do, they better do it quickly!
