On most Thursdays FirstDown PlayBook brings you a special treat here on the Coaches Community website. We feature a breakdown of personnel and technique provided by our friends over at The Scouting Academy who are our go to experts in this field

As any playcaller will tell you, it is really hard to be a successful offense when you’re behind the sticks. Therefore, one of the best things a running back can do for his team is to eliminate the negative play. Many times, a back is lucky to just get back to the line of scrimmage. But when you’re Dalvin Cook, you’re not just looking to eliminate the negative play, you’re looking to turn even the ugliest start to a play into a big gain.

The Vikings here are using a jet motion in an attempt to get the defense to overpursue, but it backfires. The corner chasing the play blitzes instead of chasing the jet and has Cook in his crosshairs. Cook, though, as he catches the ball, recognizes the defender in the backfield and shows off his A+ change of direction. Cook sticks his foot in the ground and gets vertically quickly, and the defender has no shot at him.

This next-level processing and change of direction not only eliminates the negative play, but also nets the Vikings an explosive run. Certainly not how they drew it up, but they’ll take it!
