Oregon Creative Wham Play Goes 89
By FirstDown PlayBook on Nov 6, 2019

All offensive coaches like a good Wham run play every now and then, especially when the play works. The trouble is that often times the play looks a lot better on the grease board than it does on the field. Let’s face it, that’s no small human you are normally trying to block with a tight end or fullback.

There are advantages though. The play itself can result in a nice changeup run that hits the defense right down the middle. This is always disheartening for any defense. Other pluses include slowing down that three hundred pound human from attacking up the field the entire game.

When we saw the wham run that Oregon hit Washington State with this season we were thoroughly impressed. After all, it was an 89 yard touchdown that saw the running back find the end zone untouched.

A closer look reveals that this wham scheme is a little different than most we have seen. On this scheme Oregon got a nice double on the zero nose that totally separated the defense. A lot of other things went right for the Ducks on this play but it is an excellent play to study and maybe include in your next game plan.
