Use Your Screen Game For Conditioning

By FirstDown PlayBook on Apr 22, 2018

Any time you can find a way to condition your football team with football like activities you are going to come out way ahead in the long term. We say “football like” because we realize there are rules at any level of football that restrict what you can do in  the off season with the players.

When it comes to conditioning the offensive line it can be hard to create ways to get it done with football in mind. Too often the big guys are in the weight room doing what the big guys do and mixing in sprints to create a form of conditioning during the off season.

There are not many football plays other than special teams plays that involve as much running as a screen pass. The modern versions of the screen generally have the offense spread out across the field and the timing is much like that of a kickoff return. When ever play gets spread out across the entire field the players who struggle the most are the offensive line.

Our suggestion is that if you have screens in your offense and we assume that all of you do if you coach at the high school level, incorporate screen blocking assignments into your conditioning. Have your offensive line go through their normal pass sets and then sprint to a standup dummy or even a cone. This way you are getting some football knowledge incorporated with the offensive line conditioning.

Your offensive line can probably get four screen pass simulations in with one trip down the field and if you do that about five times you are sure to get the intended effect with conditioning and have less teaching to do when you finally get the rest of the team and the ball out there on the field this summer.
